Goal 4 - Promote and model digital citizenship and Christian discipleship within the context of the digital age
Example 1: Text messaging has developed a dark side, with the increase of sexting and bullying cases. Also, text messaging can be seen as a nuisance when students try to get away with it during class time. Therefore, coupled with the fact that I wanted a new and better way to communicate with parents and students about happenings in science class, I decided to find a way that text messaging could be used for the power of good. Using the Apple app, Remind101, I have created rosters that my students and their parents can join in order to receive text message updates and reminders. This method of communication has become hugely popular amongst my students and their parents, because it is easy and efficient. I have included the letter that I sent home to students and parents as evidence, and this artifact meets Goal 4 because it shows how digital-age tools can be used for positive communication and educational purposes.
Example 2:
With the rising popularity of social networking sites and the ability for students to become more connected than ever before comes the problem of a new type of bullying: cyber-bullying. As a teacher, I understand that it is my role to encourage and model appropriate use of these collaborative tools, and to teach my students the possible dangers associated with using them. Therefore, I have included a Prezi presentation that I use to teach students about the different types of cyber-bullying and its effects. This artifact meets Goal 3 because it shows that I can use what I know about modeling digital citizenship to educate my students so that they can have a safe experience in the digital world. Cyber-Bullying Prezi
Example 3:
This artifact is a Prezi presentation about the copyright law. It discusses the law itself, how it started, why it exists, fair use policies, and implications for copyright infringement. I use this Prezi presentation with my students to teach them about the copyright law before they do any type of research-based project in my classroom. This artifact meets Goal 4 because it shows that I can teach students how to use others’ work ethically and legally while researching science topics, and how they can protect their own creative works.
